Nifty trades above 24,200 level; private bank shares advance
The domestic equity benchmarks traded with modest gains in mid-afternoon trade, supported by sustained foreign fund inflows, buying in blue-chip stocks, and robust earnings from heavyweight TCS. Investor sentiment remained positive as market participants looked ahead to the upcoming Q1 FY27 earnings from other corporates for cues on business performance and the FY27 outlook. The Nifty traded above the 24,200 level. Private bank shares extended gains for two consecutive trading sessions.
At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex jumped 845.85 points or 1.10% to 77,587.67. The Nifty 50 index rose 251.15 points or 1.05% to 24,213.95.
The broader market outperformed the frontline indices. The BSE 150 MidCap Index rose 1.25% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index added 1.16%.
The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,811 shares rose and 1,343 shares fell. A total of 199 shares were unchanged.
Buzzing Index:
The Nifty Private Bank index rose 1.19% to 28,093.85. The index jumped 1.91% over the previous two trading sessions.
Bandhan Bank (up 5.16%), RBL Bank (up 4.44%), IDFC First Bank (up 1.72%), ICICI Bank (up 1.59%), Axis Bank (up 1.57%), Yes Bank (up 1.31%), HDFC Bank (up 0.88%), Federal Bank (up 0.52%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 0.49%) and IndusInd Bank (up 0.08%) jumped.
Numbers to Track:
The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper shed 0.43% to 6.725 compared with the previous session close of 6.754.
In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 95.4150 compared with its close of 95.4700 during the previous trading session.
MCX Gold futures for 5 August 2026 settlement shed 0.89% to Rs 1,44,001.
The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was down 0.09% to 100.86.
The United States 10-year bond yield shed 0.07% to 4.536.
In the commodities market, Brent crude for September 2026 settlement shed 9 cents or 0.12% to $76.21 a barrel.
Stocks in Spotlight:
Dhanlaxmi Bank rose 2.60% after the bank announced that Krishnakumar K has assumed charge as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with effect from 10 July 2026.
Eimco Elecon (India) fell 0.57%. The company reported a 59.9% drop in net profit to Rs 70.35 crore on a 6.1% increase in revenue to Rs 520.56 crore in Q1 FY27 as compared with Q1 FY26.
