India non-fossil fuel capacity expanded over 12 years

Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, announced the growth of India's renewable-energy sector in a recent speech. He noted that the country has surpassed 300 GW of installed non-fossil-fuel capacity, reaching about 302–303 GW, with the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana benefiting around 53.5 lakh households. Joshi mentioned that India’s non-fossil-fuel capacity rose from 80.3 GW to 300.5 GW over 12 years, marking a 275 percent increase. Solar capacity jumped from 2.8 GW to 165 GW, a nearly 58-fold growth, while wind capacity increased from 21 GW to 58 GW, up 176 percent. During the first four months of FY 2026–27, India added over 17 GW of renewable-energy capacity.
