Freight Loading in July 2026 surges, Indian Railways

Indian Railways showcased robust operational performance in July 2026, achieving a 9% increase in freight loading with a total of 141.3 million tonnes, compared to 129.7 million tonnes in July 2025. This growth is driven by strong demand across key economic sectors and improvements in freight logistics efficiency. Significant year-on-year increases were noted in various commodity groups, including Iron Ore (22.2%), Coal (11.5%), Food Grains (11.5%), Fertilizers (12%), and Other Goods (12.1%), demonstrating rising demand from infrastructure, manufacturing, and agriculture.

Moreover, domestic coal supply to thermal power plants surged by 20% in response to increased coal demand. The rise in freight movement contributed to an additional revenue of Rs 1,137 crore over July 2025, marking an 8% growth. Notable freight revenue increases were reported by several Zonal Railways, including East Central Railway (33%) and Eastern Railway (33%). Additionally, passenger traffic rose, with 63.35 crore passengers transported in July 2026, up from 62.19 crore in the same month the previous year, indicating continuous growth in both suburban and non-suburban passenger segments.
